Iron Gate Kitchen Sous Chef Ashleigh Handsaker Wins 2026 Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award

After six years of competing and five Grand Final appearances, Iron Gate Kitchen Sous Chef Ashleigh Handsaker has taken out the 2026 Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award, representing regional NSW alongside some of the best emerging culinary talent from across Australia and New Zealand.

The competition challenges young chefs to create an entrée, main and dessert within a tight timeframe, with judging spanning taste, technique, teamwork, sustainability, professionalism and performance under pressure.

For Ashleigh, the win has been years in the making.

Returning to the competition year after year, she has continued to refine her skills, push herself further and build towards the result she knew she was capable of.

Beyond what landed on the plate, one detail particularly stood out: the judges’ recognition of Ashleigh’s supportive nature towards her fellow competitors. In an environment built around pressure and performance, her willingness to encourage those around her became another part of what set her apart.

Ashleigh’s career has continued to grow here in the Hunter Valley, progressing from Junior Sous Chef to Sous Chef at Iron Gate Kitchen, where she works alongside Head Chef Lara Hagan.

Her win is a special moment for regional hospitality and another reminder of the calibre of young talent coming out of the Hunter Valley.
